Merzbau is a small black-and-white watercolor painting based on one of the three existing photographs of Kurt Schwitters’ immersive installation with the same name. Schwittters’ total work of art was constructed between 1923 and 1937 in his apartment/studio in Hannover, Germany, and was destroyed by allied air raids at the end of World War II. Ezawa’s drawing of Merzbau was first exhibited as part of a wallpaper installation at Slash in the fall of 2019. Composed strictly out of geometric shapes shifting between different hues of grey, this piece represents the closest Kota has come to making an abstract painting.
 
Kota Ezawa is an artist living and working in Oakland, California, and Berlin, Germany, whose work explores the appropriation and mediation of current events and images, referencing sources from the news, art history, and popular culture. His work has been showcased at numerous museums nationally and internationally and has been acquired by leading institutions including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, Museum of Modern Art, New York, Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, D.C, J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles, and Art Institute of Chicago. He received the SECA Award in 2006, a Eureka Fellowship in 2010, and his work was included in the 2019 Whitney Biennial.

Morgan Fisher is an artist and filmmaker who lives and works in Los Angeles. He was first known for his films made during the structuralist moment. In the past two decades, while continuing his work in film, he has also exhibited paintings and, more recently, photographs. His work has been included in three Whitney Biennial exhibitions, 1985, 2004, and 2014, and is represented in international public collections including the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, FRAC Ile-de-France, Paris, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. He was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1987.

Mimi Lauter is a Los Angeles-based artist working in oil and soft-pastel. In 2012, Lauter was included in the first Los Angeles Biennial Made in L.A. 2012 organized by the Hammer Museum in collaboration with LAXART. Recent institutional presentations include the Kasteel Wijlre Estate, Netherlands (2022); Frye Art Museum, Seattle, WA (2022); and participation in Prospect.5, New Orleans, LA (2021). Her work is represented in the collections of the Frederick R. Weisman Art Foundation, Los Angeles, CA; Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, CA; Henry Art Gallery at University of Washington, Seattle, WA; Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles, CA; and Marciano Art Foundation, Los Angeles, CA.

Calvin Marcus lives and works in Los Angeles. His mixed-media paintings, sculptures, and drawings have been shown widely at galleries and institutions, including the 2019 Whitney Biennial and solo exhibitions at K11 Musea in Hong Kong, The Power Station in Dallas, Peep-Hole in Milan, and Public Fiction in Los Angeles. His work is in the permanent collections of the Astrup Fearnley Museet, Oslo, Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris, K11 Art Foundation, Hong Kong, Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, Museum of Modern Art, New York, Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, and Whitney Museum of American Art, New York.

Each of the fifteen 8 1/4 x 5 7/8 inch pieces was initially taped together as “one surface” onto which a completed composition was spray painted. They were then separated. The pieces function both on their own individually and together as a larger work.
 
Mitzi Pederson currently lives and works in San Francisco. Her sculptural and installation-based work has been exhibited at galleries and institutions including Ratio 3, San Francisco, Nicole Klagsbrun, New York, White Columns, New York, World Class Boxing, Miami, The Approach, London, Fused Space, San Francisco, White Flag Projects, St. Louis, the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, New Langton Arts, San Francisco, the Atlanta Contemporary Art Center, Oakland Museum of California, The Aspen Art Museum, The Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, The University of California Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive, and The MCA, Chicago. She received the SECA Award from SFMOMA in 2006 and her work was included in the 2008 Whitney Biennial.

This product contains amber dioxane (CAS #: 117933-89-8), trade name “karanal.” Amber dioxane has been designated by the ECHA (European Chemical Association) as a Substance of Very High Concern (SVHC). It was included Annex XIV of REACH Authorization List (ID: 601-499-3) with a Sunset Date of August 27, 2023. As of the end of 2022, its manufacture has been phased out and it is no longer supported by industry due to environmental persistence and bioaccumulative concerns.
 
Sean Raspet is an artist based in San Francisco. His works have consisted of liquid chemical formulations, artificial flavor and fragrance molecules, food, nutrition, human metabolism, and human cellular development via stem cells. More recently his work has involved plant genetics and the breeding of new varieties through randomly-induced mutation. Raspet’s work has been exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, Museum of Contemporary Art, Detroit, de Young Museum, San Francisco, Jessica Silverman Gallery, San Francisco, M Woods Museum, Bejing, the 9th Berlin Biennale, Bridget Donahue, New York, Sculpture Center, New York, and The Kitchen, New York, among others.
