印象/Impressions is a multi-channel orchestrated listening experience by Angie Zheng 郑晴, centering on four of her musical compositions.
In Chinese when asking someone if they remember something, you say “有印象吗?” which directly translates to “do you have an impression of it?” This question foregrounds a person’s feeling about a memory and acknowledges that this feeling can change over time. The primary sonic material in 印象/Impressions are selected from archived performances and rehearsals from the last 20 years of Zheng’s violin and viola performances. In the exhibition, they are presented as evolving works that continue to transform as they encounter new people and environments.
Zheng’s musical compositions play through various listening devices, displayed alongside musical scores, and print projects that move between languages and graphic representation. Inviting visitor participation, Zheng’s aim is to deconstruct existing hierarchies between composer, performer, and audience, releasing expectations of linearity in process.
