/room/ is a 6′ x 19′ project space adjacent to the / main gallery, directed by Maxine Schoefer-Wulf and dedicated to exhibiting the work of local*, emerging and early-career artists selected from open calls by a series of guest jurors. Initiated in 2019 in the small office at /’s first location, /room/ continues to be a platform for early-career artists to exhibit experimental, primarily solo projects, developed collaboratively from their submitted proposals. In addition to these solo exhibitions, /room/ projects have also included a publication, an online group exhibition, and an installation on our bookshelves, in Minnesota Street Project’s media room, and in Merhingplatz 20, a bedroom gallery in Berlin.

All exhibiting artists are paid a fee and given the opportunity to engage with the community through public programming, including workshops and artist talks.

We only accept proposals through our /room/ open calls, which we announce on our website and social media platforms. There is never an application fee to participate in our open calls.

*We understand that these are uncertain and economically challenging times and accept submissions from emerging artists with deep ties to the Bay Area who may have recently or temporarily relocated elsewhere.
